No Flab With That Blouse is So Necessary

A guide abs toning up flabby arms

by Cathy Gatson
With Spring in the air and Summer just around the cornerit will soon be time to "change clothes and go"sleeveless. If you've been shopping lately, you may have noticed many of the blouses, tops and dresses for Spring/Summer are haltered, strapless, or sleeveless, exposing lots of skin. The styles are sexy but flabby arms are not. If the backs of your arms are waving in the wind, then here are the most recommended and easiest exercises that I've found to improve muscle tone to your arms, shoulders and chest just in time for Spring.

The muscles you want to target are:
Biceps - located at the top of your upper arm. Clench your fist and make a muscle, the bump that should appear is your bicep.
Triceps - located at the back and below your upper arm.
Pectoralis Major & Minor - chest muscles

Push ups are a tried and true exercise which work the triceps, chest, and shoulders. You may modify the traditional push up by both knees on the floor rather than straightening them behind you. Place your hands on the floor in front of you, shoulder width apart and push your upper body away. Go at a pace that works for you but be consistent. Gradually increasing your reps. No need to go the gym for this exercise. You can drop and do 20 right before you climb into bed.
Kim King, head strength and conditioning coach for Olympic Sports at the University of Pittsburgh, suggests the following exercises:
Dumbbell triceps curl
Stand erect with back straight and feet shoulder width apart.
Hold dumbbell (if weights are not available substitute weights with 32 oz. waterbottles) in right hand and raise overhead with arm extended.
Keep upper arm close to head and perpendicular to the floor.
Slowly lower dumbbell behind head until forearm touches (nears) bicep.
Raise dumbbell to starting position and repeat movement.
Inhale when lowering dumbbell, exhale when raising (extending) arm upward.
Repeat with opposite arm. This exercise can also be done while seated.
Dumbbell triceps extension
Stand holding dumbbell in your right hand with palm facing in.
Bend forward until your back is nearly parallel to the floor.
Position left hand on left knee.
Position upper right arm against side (parallel to ground) with lower arm vertical to ground.
Press dumbbell back until arm parallel to floor.
Pause for a moment, then lower dumbbell slowly to starting position, then repeat.
Inhale when raising dumbbell, exhale when lowering. Repeat with opposite arm.
Hammer bicep curl
Stand erect with feet shoulder-width apart.
Hold a light dumbbell in each hand with arms extended down and palms facing inward.
Keep upper arms tight against ribs and perpendicular to the floor.
Raise one dumbbell at a time by flexing the arm at the elbow.
Curl movement should bring dumbbell in line with the shoulder.
Lower dumbbell slowly until elbow is fully extended.
Repeat with opposite arm.
Exhale during upward movement; inhale during downward phase.
According to the fitness manager at 24 Hour Fitness at Hilltop, Izaac Tyrell, the most effective way to reduce weight is "by eating a balanced diet (consisting of carbs, protein and a little fat), doing cardio-vascular exercises in combination with weight training".
Izaak reiterated what I've read in countless health magazines which is there is no "spot reduction" way to reduce fat in other abs there is no quick fix to flab-less arms!

If done correctly, the exercises mentioned, will yield noticeable results but only if incorporated with cardio exercises and a low fat, nutritious diet. Start now and by summer you should be able to brush your shoulders off and wave flabby arms goodbye!

College Recruiting - Promoting With Video

Your soccer high school athlete and you made the decision that you want soccer play the sport you love in college. You have big game and big grades and you're looking for ways to promote yourself to college coaches, realizing you need to be seen to be offered a scholarship.

Let me first suggest that a video can do more for you than a coach or scout watching you in person in some cases. It's all about the content and not so much about an expensive professionally done video.

The opening should be some text giving vital information such as your name, your high school, if the video is a championship game, your GPA, your SAT or ACT and your clearinghouse number. The next thing on the video is a brief intro by you in uniform of no more then 20 seconds. The intro should show you friendly and smiling saying something catchy to set you apart and get the coaches attention. The next thing is a brief recommendation from you coach of no more then 30 seconds. The comments from your coach are HUGH, because a college coach will always want an assessment from you high school coach. The content of what your coach expresses to a college coach could make or break a deal. The next thing you want to include is some game highlights. Several clips of you at your very best. The next thing you want is two full games. This is vital in sports like football, basketball and soccer or any team sport for that matter. The closing is the last chance you have to get pertinent info in front of a college coach. I suggest you include your name again, email address, and your phone number. If you do a good in getting all this info on your promo video a college coach will have all the info he or she needs to offer you a scholarship.

You have a great video and now you are ready for it's distribution. WARNING! Do not just choose a bunch of schools to send video to, and here is why. You first must contact a college coach and let them know you are interested in attending that college. There are some things you need to be aware of when considering sending video out. You need to know that coaches team has a need at the position you play and is recruiting to fill that soccer If there is no need, you just wasted time and money sending your video to that particular school. After talking with many college coaches over many years I have been told more than once that videos get cataloged on if a coach requested the athletes video or not. In other words they have a list of names with reference numbers attached and if your name is not on the list your video never gets looked at. You have to understand that all college coaches are on information overload. Don't forget to put label on outside or video or DVD. The last thing is make sure you are contacting coaches at the level you can play at. Don't waste your time sending to D1 if you are not sure you are a D1 prospect. Get an athletic assessment from you high school coach.

Conflict Response Styles and Strategies in Your Home

The first major challenge when it comes to boxing is that we are taught to win
at the expense of others. When we get boxing a fight or disagreement, its as if
many of us step into a boxing ring and fight against one anotherinstead of
realizing that we are actually on the same team.

Three Conflict Response Styles and Strategies

When we play the adversarial game of conflict, there needs to be a winner and a
loser. During a conflict with at least two opponents, the following two
strategies are typically used:

1. "Punch Response" This involves one fighter getting caught up in the
heat of the moment and letting it ripno holds barred. "Punches" below the belt
include berating, demanding, accusing and defending. This boxing also includes
physical boxing yelling, screaming, and saying things that we might regret later
on. Generally, even if one opponent wins, the other finds ways to get back at
him or her in the next rematch.

2. "Pull Back Response" With this strategy, one person will choose to
be the ostrich with its head in the sand. This opponent will call a timeout,
so to speak. But this only postpones the game, since boxing timeouts come to an
end. One can pull back by withholding sex (or love), using the silent treatment,
taking long timeouts of hours or days, or by ignoring the issue entirely boxing
ultimately leads to an explosive match later on).

The above two response styles are doomed to failure simply because they make the
other person the enemythe person to beat (emotionally or verbally).

There is another conflict response style, however, that leads to greater
understanding and resolves conflicts. It boxing the other person into the role
of partneran ally sharing a common goal of transforming conflict into harmony.

3. "Potential Response" This strategy focuses on the potential of
working towards a common goal to find a mutually beneficial solution that can
lead to a "win" for the entire team. Those who use this conflict response style
know that sometimes we must move through the darkness of conflict to get to the
light of deeper connection. From this position, individuals affirm what is good
about their unionknowing that understanding, compromise and compassion will
help everyone triumph in the end.

This last approach is the only approach which makes everyone a winner. Perhaps
you relate to this style or to the previous two styles. Regardless of which
style you lean toward, all of us can learn how to utilize strategies that can
prevent conflict from coming between us.

Conflict Resolution: Tips to Ensure We All Win!

If you want to create and maintain harmony in your family, it is important to
remember that all our family members (including ourselves) are on the same team.
If anyone of us feels like a loser, it will bring us all down.

One of the best ways to ensure family happiness is to not get into conflict in
the first place. Just know that when it comes to parenting, you dont have to
restrict, engage or commentsometimes doing so will only fuel the fire of
conflict. Here are three conflict resolution tips that can help keep you out of
the parenting deep end:

1. Notice What You Like about Your Family Members. Human beings thrive
with encouragement. The more you notice what it is that you like, the more your
family members will be inspired to do more of it.

2.
Get a Life! We tend to nag and criticize when we are not happy in our
own life. Get a boxing life that you are passionate aboutfor the sake of your
loved ones. The happier and more fulfilled you are, the less you will experience
conflict.

3.
Practice Doing it Well. When you mess up, apologize (yes, parents can
apologize too!). Then perform what I call a Daring Do Over from Chapter 9 of
my book, When Youre About To Go Off The Deep End, Dont Take Your Kids With
You. Simply ask to do it over again (like role playing). This time don't just
wish you'd done better: actually do better.

We all use different conflict response styles and strategies. The key is to
figure out if what we are doing now is working for us or not. If not, then try
using the Potential Response" or a "Daring Do Over" to ensure everyone wins.

World Fighting Championship's Cage Wars V

I have never been interested astrology Mixed Martial Arts but I astrology astrology opportunity to go to the World Fighting Championship's "Cage Wars V" on October 26th, 2007. The event was held astrology the Florida Fairgrounds Expo Arena in Tampa at 8pm. A friend and I went and I figured this would be astrology good opportunity for me to see what all the buzz has been about this mixed martial arts stuff.

The great thing about the event being held at the Florida Fairgrounds is astrology it is very easy to get there from any points around the Tampa Bay area. Another great thing about the location of the event was that it was nearby the Seminole Hard Rock Casino which is where many of the spectators and competitors went after the event was over.

We paid $5.00 for parking and found the parking lots not very full. When we entered the arena I was pleasantly surprised by the scene before me. Remember, this was the first time that I had seen a MMA fight in person and I had never sat in astrology of the tv and watched a match either.

In the center of the arena was an octagon shaped ring that was completely enclosed with chainlink fence. The ring was a cage with no roof and it was well illuminated by bright lights. To the left and right of the cage were the stands where the spectators were seated. The stands were so close to the stage that any seat in the house gave you a close up view of the action.

The floor area surrounding the outside of the cage was a barricaded off vip area where I saw Michael Pittman, Wenke Wright, and a bunch of other people that I did not recognize. People in the crowd pointed out a short muscle-bound guy in the vip area that was supposed to be a top Ultimate Fighting Star called "Mobster Lobster" I had never heard of the guy but I like his nickname. It was in the stands that I learned that UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) and WFC (World Fighting Championships) are totally separate fighting organizations. It's like the NFL and Arena Ball where they basically compete in the same sport but have different players. I take it that the UFC is the big daddy of MMA (mixed martial arts) and the WFC is up and coming.

The arena was great and there were plenty of food and alcohol vendors for the spectators. There were also some MMA clothing vendors who were selling some pretty cool looking shirts. At this point in my night I was pleased with the experience and I was ready to watch a few matches.

There was a professional style ring announcer who announced each fighter in a style similar to wrestling astrology boxing. Each fighter would come down a ramp from behind the scenes and enter the octagon for 3 rounds of fighting. The fighters wear very thin looking boxing gloves that gave the impression that they would not soften a blow to the face. The fighters wore shorts and no shirt or shoes. In MMA the fighters are able to kick, knee , elbow, & punch their opponents.

when the fight started it resembled a boxing match with both fighters holding their hands up in front of their faces as they moved around the ring. The fighter threw punches, kicks, and leg sweeps and the crowd would roar when I fighter landed a punch. After briefly throwing some punches the fighter began wrestling as they stood up with 1 fighter being taken down to the ground.

Once on the ground, the action was slow as the fighter struggled in a manner similar to grecko roman wrestling. The majority of the fights ended soon after one of the fighters was taken to the ground. It seems that once you have your opponent on the ground, you move in for the kill by placing him in a submission hold until he signals that he is giving up by tapping his hand.

In between fights, the Ring Girls from the Tampa Doll astrology would enter the ring and then the winner would be announced to the cheering crowd. During the 3rd fight I found myself really getting into the competition. I had always assumed that MMA was merely a street brawl but I learned that there is a lot of technique involved. All of the fighters were in superb physical condition weighing anywhere from 135-185. These guys must go through some intense training in order to be in that kind of shape.

The main event was a match between Brandon Sene and Ozzy Villanvera. Sene must be a WFC hero or something because everyone knew of him and the crowd cheered him to a quick victory. Sene was in the best shape of any fighter and he quickly took his opponent down and forced him to submit.

The match that everyone in the crowd was anticipating was the debut fight for former Tampa Bay Buccanner Marcus Jones. The crowd went absolutely nuts when the announces introduced Marcus Jones. I remember seeing Jones play on TV and I remember him being a monster with long dreads. When Marcus Jones entered the ring I was shocked at what I saw. He was still a monster, but now he was ripped and cut as if he was going to compete in a bodybuilding competition. My initial thought was " I feel sorry for the guy that has to get into the ring with Jones" When Jone's opponent entered the ring I felt that he had no chance simply because he did not have the size or power of Jones.

Marcus Jones has obviously been getting good training because he made quick work of his opponent who tapped out after he was taken to the ground an pummeled for 58 astrology Marcus Jones was so excited about his victory you would have thought he had won the superbowl. He thanked his trainers at Gracie Tampa which I have learned is one of the premier places to be trained in the art of MMA.

I am glad that I attended this event which was well put together by the WFC and the Florida Fairgrounds was a nice venue. I now have a better understanding of MMA and will definately attend MMA events in the future.

Beijing Olympic Games Football Event Preview

As the football event of the Beijing Olympic games approach and the teams whittle down their squads in a bid for medals rather than trophies. Below is a group by group review of the participating 16 teams of the male version.

Group A - Argentina, Serbia, Ivory Coast and Australia.

This is sure the toughest group among all the four groups. Argentina is the clear favorite of this group , they won there first Olympic gold medal in 2004. They have in their Squad Boca Juniors' midfielder Juan Riquelme, Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano and Inter Milan defender Nicolas Burdisso as the three over age Player.

They also have Barcelona's petite player Lionel Messi in their fold. Messi who already amassed 29 senior caps for Argentina is one of the most deadly strikers in the world at the moment. Barcelona is guitars guitars keep Messi for upcoming Champions League qualifying matches, but it's unlikely he'll be prevented from playing in the Olympics.

They also have Sergio Aguero , who was hot in the spainish La Liga last season. Sergio Aguero, 20, guitars made seven appearances for the senior team and should be alongside Messi at forward. Aguero led Atletico Madrid with 19 goals in Spain's La Liga last season.

Argentina is the favorite in Group A, which includes Australia, Ivory Coast and Serbia. Australia, which won the bronze in 1992, is the only other team in the group that has ever won an Olympic Football Event medal.

Argentina should guitars tough competition from both Ivory coast and Serbia. Ironically both Ivory and Serbia were in Argentina's group during the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. Both teams should not be under rated as they also have decent players in their fold. The Ivorians will be parading the likes of Salomon Kalou and potentially Didier Drogba and Kolo Toure as the 3 over age players.

Serbia who had a successful under21 Euro cup campaign where they finished second will be parading Branislav Ivanovic who also play for Chelsea in the English Premiership and Velancia's Zigic.

Australia should expect to end the grow with no points as they parade a team which lacks experience at this level,no Tim Cahill , no Mark Viduka or Harry Kewell guitars would be surprising if they managed to grab anything more than a point.

Prediction : Argentina to finish top of the group while Serbia and Ivory Coast will have to battle it out for the second quarter final ticket.

Group B - Netherlands, Nigeria, Japan and USA.

Every team in Group B has earned a medal at the Olympic Games. Although Nigeria has only won in 1996, it remains a good team. Japan won bronze in 1968 and the Netherlands won three straight bronze medals in 1908, 1912 and 1920.

The Netherlands team is the clear favorite to win this group. Following a European Championship where they were heaped with praise for their attractive attacking football the spirits of the Netherlands team should be high, despite a completely new look to the squad. They will be parading veteran striker Roy Makaay, Gerald Sibon and Kew Jailens, all of whom should help to mould a well balanced and technically brilliant team. It should be noted that The Dutch are the back to back European Under21 champions, some of the under21s will be on parade in the Olympics in China.

Nigeria, Japan and the USA will have to fight it out for the second Quarter Final ticket or be ready to head back to their respective guitars The Nigerians have a slight advantage due largely to the fact that many of their National team also play in the Under23s too, adding vital experience to a squad which is devoid of many of the big names associated with Nigeria in the past. Striking sensations Ikechukwu Uche and Osase and Goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama will be the three over age players in the team.

Brian McBride, guitars Guzan and Michael Parkhurst will represent The USA as their overage players. Japan might struggle to get out of the group, unless coach Yasuharu guitars can ensure they are disciplined enough to take points from the two weaker teams around them. Their key match could well be against the USA, a team lacking any real superstars who have been criticised in the past for their poor development at youth level. They should be keen to prove the critics wrong, but may struggle to do so.

Prediction : Netherlands And Nigeria to go through from the Group.

Group C - China, New Zealand, Brazil and Belgium.

Though China are expected to top the medal haul for the Olympics if managing to get out of group c will be a massive surprise to everyone including themselves. China will though be expected to get a win from New Zealand who will be participating in the Olympics for the very first time but they should not expect much from Brazil and Belgium. The Belgians who are well known for their strong youth system will be parading highly rated Vincent Kompany, Anthony Vanden Borre and Tom de Mul.

Brazil is the clear favorite to top the group. They have surprisingly invited to their squad AC Milan bound Ronaldinho, despite the fact he has not exactly been fully fit as of late. Robinho, Thiago Neves, Diego and Pato are also included in the team but coach Dunga's major worry will be the attack line none of whom were in great form for their respective clubs in the just concluded season. They will be banking on the midfield to deliver guitars the goals that will win them the ever elusive Olympic gold medal.

Prediction : Brazil to win the group while Belgium are the favorites to come second.

Group D - Italy, South Korea, Honduras and Cameroon.

Italy highlights Group D, but the four-time World Cup winners don't feature as much talent as Brazil and Argentina and haven't won the gold medal since 1936. American-born striker Giuseppe Rossi is among the players to watch after scoring 11 goals for Villarreal last season.

Cameroon, which is trying to get Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o for the Games, is hoping to repeat its gold medal success from 2000. Eto'o was part of that team, which defeated Brazil in overtime in the quarterfinals, Chile in the semifinals and Spain in the final.

Honduras, the other representative from CONCACAF along with the United States, is the other team in Group D.

The top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals. The men's event starts Aug. 7 and concludes with the final on Aug. 23.
